Description

Last Light is a small but spirited town perched on the western fringe of the Witchwood, the last proper settlement before the forest swallows the road entirely. With only a few hundred residents, it serves as a waystation for Witchguard patrols and a home for their families, along with a handful of merchants, farmers, and tradespeople who make their living supplying soldiers and the occasional traveler brave or foolish enough to venture west. The town sits in a broad green clearing where the grass still grows thick and wildflowers bloom in the warmer months, a stubborn pocket of life at the edge of something darker.

The main road runs straight through town, lined with timber-and-stone buildings with painted shutters and thatched roofs. Lanterns hang from iron posts at regular intervals, and on most evenings the warm glow of the Lion’s Pride Inn spills across the central square along with the sound of fiddle music and laughter. A stone well marks the town center, and a small open market operates on fair-weather mornings. Despite its size, Last Light has the energy of a place that refuses to be grim, its people proud and close-knit, accustomed to living on the edge of something they don’t fully understand.

But the Witchwood is creeping closer. The treeline has noticeably advanced over the past several years, and the woods at the town’s western edge are darker and more tangled than anyone remembers. The area around the Last Light Church has taken on a dreary, unsettling quality. The grass grows thin and grey near the chapel grounds, and a faint chill hangs in the air even on warm days. Some townsfolk have stopped attending services altogether, muttering that the place feels wrong, though no one can say exactly why. The lanterns near the church flicker and dim more often than they should.
